Growing in the Kootenays

Explanation

Explanation of symbols:

O  Sow in seed trays, plug packs or pots

S  Sow directly into the prepared ground

T  Transplant to garden or field when plants are a suitable size

H  Harvest produce - Timing is based on having had reasonable weather

H  Crops would not normally be harvestable due to insufficient light to maintain growth

X   We do not recommend that plants are grown in this manner

They would not be expected to produce a crop.

Explanation of Frost Free Dates:

The approximate LAST and FIRST frost dates are an average, taken over the last 10 years. It is important to note that in a given area, local topography , elevation and weather will effect these dates.

Because these are average dates - there is still a chance of having frosts during the frost free period.

See page on Daylight hours

Extended frost free period in Greenhouse or under row covers

A greenhouse will extend the season by about 6 weeks at the beginning of the season and about 4 weeks at the end of the season - assuming normal / average weather.

Row covers can extend the season by about 3 weeks at either end of the season . They provide about 5 degrees C protection from frost. However, on very hot days, the temperature under the covers can rise quickly, so vigilance is required.

Notes:

Special notes relating to a specific crop will be shown as above. Crop specific notes relating to growing in the area will be shown on the notes page on the main menu.

How to read the table:

O S  The first O or S denotes when the first seeding should be made. There is always one T for each weekly O seeding date.

If you use the first O seeding date, then your transplanting week will be the first T, if you use the second O seeding date, then your transplanting week will be the second T, and so on.

Delaying transplanting beyond the period shown will result in poor or stunted plants and reduced harvests.

Your first expected harvest week H will also vary according to the O or S seeding date and the T transplanting date.
